Morning and Afternoon Preschool Classes

The Early Learning Center of Woodbury (ELC), on Bear Hill Road, was founded in 1972 by Kathleen G. Cosgriff. Located on two spacious acres, the school is housed in a former barn, which has been transformed into a warm, creative, open environment for children.

Early Learning Center of Woodbury

Accreditation - ELC is accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs.

Staff - Director Kathleen G. Cosgriff, has a master's degree in Education and is certified by the Connecticut State Department of Education to teach public school from pre-k through high school. Her experience includes three years of teaching in New Milford Public Schools, as well as several years teaching in remedial areas in local school systems. Since she founded ELC, Mrs. Cosgriff has been its Director, as well as a teacher in every session. Teachers all have college degrees, certifications and teaching experience. Each teacher has served as an intern at ELC and our staff attends professional meetings and workshops throughout the year.

Admission - ELC has an open admission policy and accepts children 3 to 5 years of age. Admission is determined on a first-come basis with consideration given to former ELC families and with an effort to maintain a balance of boys and girls. Applications from currently enrolled children are accepted during January for the following year. Admission to the general public begins February 1. A nonrefundable application fee must accompany each application.

Curriculum - Our curriculum is based on the principle of helping a child prepare for the future by satisfying his or her current needs and providing enriching experiences. Here is a list of our expanding curriculum: Music, Art, Language Experiences, Pre-Reading Skills, Math Concepts, Science, Gross and Fine Motor Activities, Sand and Water Play, Animal Care, Cooking and Nature. We are well equipped with video recorders, slides and overhead projectors, computers, records, tapes, CDs, DVD players and current software.

Philosophy and Goals - ELC is committed to the encouragement of continuous growth and development of each child according to his or her individual needs and potential. Teachers encourage each youngster to develop independence, creativity, self-confidence, a strong, positive self-image and promote each child’s enthusiasm for learning. Children are gently guided to work and play independently within small groups, as well as within the entire class.

Programs - Two, three and five half-day programs are available. Tuesday and Thursday mornings are limited to 3 year olds. Tuesday and Thursday afternoons are open to 3 and 4 year olds. Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings are limited to 4 and 5 year olds. Three-or five-day afternoon programs are available for the older children. The morning sessions are from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; the afternoon sessions are from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Calendar and Policies

Coming Soon!

In case of inclement weather, we will follow Region 14’s (Woodbury-Bethlehem) call for weather-related school cancellations. If school is cancelled in the morning, there is no school for the remainder of the day. Please listen to the following radio stations: WWCO-1240 AM, WATR-1320 AM, WTIC-1080 AM, KC-101 FM or watch Channel 3 or Channel 8 for information regarding Region 14 (Woodbury-Bethlehem) school cancellations, delays and early dismissals. These stations will announce late openings, as well as the closing of schools. For late openings (1.5 or 2 hrs.) in Region 14, you are asked to call a designated parent (information distributed at the preschool) for more specific information as to when the school will open, but NOT BEFORE 8:00 A.M. Our Snow Policy sheet will be distributed in early November. As in other circumstances involving your child, you should choose the safest course of action. If you do not feel comfortable confronting a particular weather situation, arrive late, leave early or opt to stay home for the day. Safety comes first!

Region 14 closing announcements can be found here.
